Description

A rounded cup, concealing a touch of ease.

The Buddha belly cup takes its form from its rounded, full body, with the vessel naturally expanding outward from the rim before gradually narrowing toward the base, creating a sturdy yet unburdensome silhouette. The full body, combined with clean, flowing lines, gives the piece an overall calm, rounded, and composed character.

Compared to cups with sharp lines, the Buddha belly cup appears softer and more approachable. Held in the palm, its rounded body naturally fits the hand; placed on a tea tray, it presents the simplicity, tranquility, and elegance pursued by Song dynasty vessels with an understated and subtle presence.

The entire piece is finished with an antique-style glaze, with a calm and rustic hue that does not pursue a single, vivid color. Under different lighting and angles, the glaze surface can reveal subtle variations in depth and layering, making it even more pleasing to the eye through its understated beauty.

Incorporating agate-in-glaze craftsmanship, the glaze layer is tempered by kiln fire to achieve a delicate, lustrous texture. Viewed closely, the glaze surface is soft and layered, feeling delicate and warm to the touch, presenting the jade-like texture unique to Ru ware.

Natural Crackle・A Unique Character for Every Piece

The glaze surface may feature naturally formed crackle patterns. The crackle is not painted by hand but appears naturally during firing, cooling, and subsequent use.

Due to factors such as kiln temperature, kiln placement, glazing, and cooling, the depth of the glaze color, the density of the crackle, and the direction of the patterns may vary slightly for each piece. These subtle differences precisely constitute the unique beauty of handmade Ru ware, where "every piece has its own character."

The Buddha Belly Form・The Meaning of Rounded Harmony

The name "Buddha belly" comes from its full and rounded body, giving a visual sense of breadth, ease, and rounded harmony.

Without elaborate decorations or intentional ostentation, it expresses Eastern beauty through the curves of the vessel itself and the color of the glaze. A cup in hand, it is both a personal cup for daily tea appreciation and a Song-style small vessel worthy of close admiration.
